What is a Nanny

Currently, there are numerous nanny positions throughout the US and overseas. I see new postings to job sites on a daily basis in the Tulsa area alone. So your question might be, What is a nanny?  Do I have to look like Nanny McPhee or Mary Poppins?

A nanny generally has special training or a college education, and is employed to care for children in a household.

A nanny might be:

  • Part-time or full-time
  • Live-in or live-out
  • Hourly or salaried

There is a huge variety in the skills and job requirements for a nanny position. A nanny’s primary focus is caring for the children in the home. They might provide planned activities, a daily schedule and enrichment activities for the children, such as going to a museum or the zoo. A nanny might also assist with a few household chores or errands, but if a nanny position requires many household duties then the job might be considered a housekeeping position versus a nanny position. Be sure to negotiate your pay and job duties with your employer.

According to Care.com, the hourly nanny wage generally ranges from $12 – $25 per hour, depending on the area of the country and the number of children under your care.

Is this the job for you? If you have a passion for early childhood education and would prefer to focus on a few children vs. a classroom environment, it just may be!
