Goal Setting for the New Year

From the desk of Jill Spradlin, Fitness and Health Trainer Department Head:

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight, go to the gym, and get fit; though many of these aspirations fall a little short! When making your New Year’s resolutions, or anytime throughout the year, make sure you use the acronym SMART for effective goal setting.

A certified personal trainer can help achieve those goals by regularly reviewing a client’s goals and the difficulties that he or she may have in reaching them. A client’s priorities and circumstances may change and it is important to be able to adjust goals when circumstances change. There are many benefits to setting goals. Setting a goal with help you direct attention to important elements of the skill being performed. They can also provide you with empowerment, satisfaction, self-confidence, increased focus, and increased motivation.
Here are a few things to think about to help you be successful in your fitness journey:
  1. Set a schedule and be consistent.
  2. Break up with old habits.
  3. What you eat in private, shows in public.
  4. Your stomach is not a trash can.
  5. One meal won’t make you fat, one work out won’t make you thin.
  6. Be proud of yourself.
  7. Give yourself compliments and mean it.
  8. Don’t be afraid to lift heavy.
  9. Cut out sugary drinks.
  10. Ask for help from a National Certified Personal Trainer.
