1. Ice Water Can Cause Dangerous Bloating in Dogs
A long running Internet warning claims that pet owners should never give their dogs ice water and cites a case of a show dog that suffered severe bloat after drinking water with ice in it. The message claims that giving dogs iced water can cause a dangerous condition called bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus). It describes a case in which a show dog suffered bloat and had to receive urgent veterinary treatment after drinking water with ice in it. Veterinary experts have dismissed the claims in the message as false. Bloat is a real condition and can certainly be very dangerous to dogs. But, there is no credible evidence to support the claim that iced water can cause the condition.
2. Bones and Crunchy Food Prevent Dental Disease
Most veterinarians are in agreement that animal bones are not a good treat for dogs. Not only do they not prevent dental disease, but they can splinter and cause significant GI issues. However, specifically formulated dental rawhide’s or dental treats designed for dental health can be helpful by neutralizing bacteria causing plaque and ‘scraping’ the teeth as the dog chews.
3. A Warm Nose Means Your Pet is Sick
Or a dry nose, or cold nose, or wet nose… The temperature and moistness of your pet’s nose can change drastically through the day and isn’t a reliable indicator of your pet’s well being. A better indication of whether your pet is sick is to look for changes in behavior or appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea or any other common symptoms seen with illness.
4. My Pet Can’t Have Fleas While Wearing Flea Collar
Flea collars are not effective at preventing fleas over the animal’s whole body. While they can be somewhat effective at preventing fleas around the animal’s neck, a prescription flea product is needed to keep the whole body free of fleas.
5. Microchips Cause Cancer
This is false. There are no studies linking microchips to cancer in animals. Microchips are an invaluable way to identify pets found without collars.
6. A Few Table Scraps Are OK for My Dog
Did you know that one ounce of cheddar cheese for a 20lb dog is like a human eating more than one and a half chocolate bars? Table scrapes are empty calories for dogs. They need precisely balanced nutrition for their specific life stage and special needs to remain healthy. Better quality dog foods are great because they give dogs exactly what they need without any excess nutrients that might be harmful
7. When Pets Scarf down Grass like Its Fettuccine Alfredo, Does That Mean They’re Sick?
While several theories about animal grass consumption exist, veterinarians have no proven answers. However, research indicates an amazing possibility: Animals may just like to eat grass. So don’t panic if your pet nibbles at the lawn from time to time. If the nibbling turns into a daily feast, talk to your veterinarian.
