5 Steps to Getting Fit

Spring is a time of new beginnings, shedding layers, sorting out your wardrobe – and, of course, a bit of spring cleaning. Now this doesn’t only apply to your house, but to ridding yourself of some unhealthy habits you may have fallen into during the winter season. Don’t be hard on yourself! The keys to getting in shape are simple. Here are some tips:

Find your “why”

Losing weight is not always synonymous with getting in shape. Maybe you just want to feel more energized and know that you’re doing something great for your body. Once you identify why you want to get in shape, it will help you power through your workouts and give you the willpower to keep going.

Pick activities you love

Hate running? Skip it! Find a type of cardio you enjoy, whether it’s biking, zumba, or swimming. Finding activities you love will make it much easier to stick to your fitness goals. Cut out the excuse of not having enough time and just adjust your workout to the time you have that day. Any movement is better than no movement!

Eat whole foods

Forget sugary protein shakes and meal bars; instead, focus on eating whole foods and fueling your body. If you are eating nutritious foods – fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein – you’re treating your body well. Pro-tip: When shopping stay on the outer edges of the grocery store. The farther you venture into the aisles, the more processed food you’ll find.

Stop thinking of health as a punishment

Find workouts that feel like you’re giving yourself a reward. Choose an outdoor activity rather than running on the treadmill. If your options are exciting, healthy living won’t feel like such a drag on your day. After all, your health is a gift to yourself!

Drinks lots of water

Drinking more water is one of the simplest ways to be healthier. Proper hydration aids digestion, gives us energy, and nourishes our skin. Keep a bottle of water with you wherever you go, and set reminders to drink water throughout the day. You’ll be sure to reap the benefits.

As you can see, there’s no “right” way to be healthy; there is only what works for you. Starting with easy changes to your routine can set you up for success in the long term. Don’t overwhelm yourself with huge goals; instead, stick to the basics. Remember: Being healthy is something to look forward to!
