How Birth Order Affects Personality

As a first born, I’ve always been told that I was bossy and a type A personality. Part of me was proud to be a natural leader, but another part of me was disappointed that I wasn’t the spontaneous, fun one, like my youngest sister.

Everyone, including my parents, always found our personalities to be different: me being the organized, tell-it-like-it-is planner, and my sister being the more risk-taking, easy-going, free spirit.  Of course, over time, you begin to see what they mean; however, I definitely grew into being my own person, bringing more balance to my personality, and so did my sister.

But there will always be that little thing they call ‘Birth Order’, bringing out our true nature, created in us by our environment through the order in which we were born.

Dr. Gail Gross says, ” Some researchers believe birth order is as important as gender and almost as important as genetics. It gets back to the old nurture vs. nature business. In my experience as an educator and a researcher, I know that no two children have the same set of parents, even though they live in the same family. Why? Because parents are different with each of their children, and no two children ever take the same role.”

I have found this to be true for many of my friends, other people and other students that I’ve known and worked with. What about you? Does the birth order theory reflect your personality correctly? How about your siblings? I think you will find it to be spot on!
