Have you ever heard of a vampire facelift? What is a vampire facelift – and what does it have to do with dental?
A vampire facelift is a procedure that involves withdrawing a patient’s blood and placing it into a centrifuge to form platelet rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then injected into the patient to erase wrinkles or apply to the face to create a more youthful look.
I first encountered this procedure at a dental office where I was previously employed. The doctor performed a number of different procedures other than those of a normal dental office such as Botox, Juvederm Fillers and vampire facelifts. I not only assisted him in dental procedures, but also assisted him in these procedures.
It was very interesting to work with him and experience these cosmetic procedures.
For the first, we would withdraw blood from the patient into two small tubes and place those tubes into centrifuge to coagulate. We would then obtain a small amount of the blood into an injectable syringe and inject into the requested area.
For the second method, the doctor would roll a small roller with prickly needles on patients’ neck, upper chest and chin to open their pores. We would then spread the coagulated blood onto patients’ body.
Platelets contain a number of growth factors that stimulate collagen synthesis – making your skin smoother and younger. The coagulated platelets will replenish lost volume and smooth out wrinkles, rejuvenating your skin creating a younger look.
Although I have not tried this procedure myself, it was fascinating to have worked at a dental office that works on more than teeth.
