I’m sure you’ve heard of veneers by now. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Nicholas Cage have obtained the perfect smile with veneers. The question is – what are they?
Veneers are very thin shells of composite resin material or ceramic (porcelain) that is bonded to the front of your teeth. Veneers are ideal for those trying to brighten their smile or to mask abnormalities in your teeth, such as discoloration, chips or gaps. According to Know Your Teeth, veneers will generally last for many years when applied properly.
How are veneers applied?
There is usually a three step process in applying veneers: a diagnosis, consultation, and bonding.
In the diagnosis, your dentist will decide if veneers are a viable option for you. If it is decided veneers will work for your needs/wants, a consultation will be scheduled. During the consultation you will work with your dentist to ensure your smile is the way you want. You’ll decide on veneer color and placement. Once you come to an agreement, your bonding appointment will be scheduled, sometimes the same day as your consultation.
To apply veneers, the teeth are lightly buffed, removing about a half a millimeter or so to accommodate the added thickness of the veneer. After the tooth is prepared, the dentist will carefully bond and sculpt the composite resin veneer to your teeth. If you are choosing ceramic veneers, a mold is taken of your teeth and then sent to a lab to construct the veneer. This could take about 1-3 weeks to get back. Once your veneers are done, you will go back for a second appointment to apply the veneers.
