Techie Tools for Christmas

December 16, 2014

Techie ChristmasAlthough Christmas is the hap-happiest time of the year, it can also be one of the most stressful. There are presents to buy, travel plans to make and parties to plan. Here is a list of resources that will hopefully take some of the stress out of the holiday season.

Gift apps:

Never find yourself at a loss as to what present to buy again.

  • The Gift Suggester app is arranged in a basic tree structure, where you start with “Recipient” or “Personality” or “Occasion” and then from there, you narrow it down further.
  • Clear is a list/reminder app with a gloriously minimalist design.  Clear comes with several color schemes if you don’t like the default, and everything about it is controlled via gestures like swipes and pinches.
  • Addwish: Friends and family don’t always make it easy to shop for them. To be sure you’re getting someone you care about something they truly want, ask them to make a wish list. AddWish makes it easy to get wish lists from others, and even easier to coordinate them. You can share your wish list online, follow the lists of others, and even work together (privately) to decide who’s getting dear old dad that snappy tie he asked for.
  • Gyft: Go ahead and gripe all you want, traditionalists. But for the gift-giving-challenged among us, sometimes gift cards are the only option. But who needs actual plastic in this day and age?  Gyft allows you to peruse and purchase right on your iPhone. The app offers digital gift cards from more than 200 retailers, and it comes with a slick digital wallet that keeps them for you.
  • The RedLaser app is incredibly helpful. When you are out and about, use the RedLaser barcode scanner to scan any product. The app pulls up current deals at local stores or tells you if a better price is close by. It also compares prices between thousands of online and offline retailers, so you will know you are getting the best deal.
  • Wunderlist is a great task tool that syncs across multiple devices. Create a list and then enter gifts and recipients as tasks. Each task would consist of a name and a gift, and can be set with a due date, a reminder, and a priority level. Once you’ve made your purchase, click on the task to “check it off the list”. You can share lists via email, or give someone access to your list so you can collaborate.
  • Santa’s Bag is a fun, user friendly app allows you to set and track a budget and even gives you a countdown to the big day, so you know how long you’ve been procrastinating!

Travel apps:

  • Gas Buddy is a free app that helps you locate gas stations near your current location and find the cheapest gas while on the go.
  • Waze is a community-based traffic and navigation app that is available free and that connects you to drivers in your area who share real-time traffic and road information such as accidents, police traps, construction areas, and more. You can also join groups and connect with friends via Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare.
  • iExit is the perfect answer to the dreaded question, how far is the next exit? Whether gas is getting low or your traveling buddies are in need of a bathroom break, iExit displays up to 100 exits ahead and rest areas, with colored icons to indicate available food, hotels, gas, and big-name retail stores.

Christmas apps for the kids:

There are lots of applications for entertaining kids like:

  • A Charlie Brown Christmas. This Christmas kids will find this amazing, interactive game application a perfect Christmas gift.
  • Google Santa Tracker is an amazing application that tracks the path of Santa Clause. It is a great countdown application with mini games that get unlocked as the date approaches.

Apps for Christmas cooking:

  • BBC Good Food Festive Recipes: Christmas is incomplete without a grand meal and recipe app.  BBC Good Food Festive Recipes lets users choose from wide collection of festive recipes starting from snacks platter to main course and dessert to prepare an extravagant Christmas dinner for loved ones.
  • This Christmas Food magazine: Need Christmas cooking inspiration? This Christmas Food magazine app has every recipe you need for the whole festive season, with stunning images of food which look just as good whether viewed horizontally or vertically – it’s your choice.

I hope you find these apps helpful with all of your Christmas plans! What do you use to stay organized during the holiday season?
