Greetings Earthlings!

January 11, 2011

This is Captain Kirk from the Starship Enterprise contacting you! Although I don’t actually fly around in the Starship Enterprise, I often wish I could beam myself from campus to campus! I serve as Commander (President) of our three great fleets (campuses)—Community Care College, Clary Sage College and Oklahoma Technical College based in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

As Captain, my goal is to help each of our great students reach his/her dreams and goals. Another one of my goals is to assist our dedicated faculty and staff to grow as professionals and become the best they can be! My “Captain Kirk Blog” is an extension of our college’s “Open Door” policy. Since I am frequently flying at warp speed, from campus to campus, I thought this blog would be a comfortable space to help others get to know me. Providing a place to share thoughts and ideas about some of the life lessons I have learned and am still learning. I’m an avid reader and will post quotes and thoughts on my blog. I hope that you will find them stimulating, interesting and helpful to you during your journey through our galaxy so you can truly “go where no man (or woman), has gone before!”

We are often told that we must endure our trials and challenges in life. We are told it is for our good, that sounds good, but it sure isn’t fun is it? Energy is required to provide lift over opposing forces. This same law applies to our personal life. Whenever an undertaking is begun, both the energy and will to endure are essential to accomplish that undertaking. The winner of a 5K race is declared at the end of the race, not after the first two kilometers. If you board a bus for Oklahoma City, you don’t get off in Stroud. If you want to gain an education, you don’t drop out prior to graduating.  Whatever your goal may be—endure at the beginning, endure through opposing forces along the way, and endure to the end.

So wrote the unknown poet-

“Stick to your task till it sticks to you. Beginners are many, but enders are few. Honor, power, place, and praise, will always come to the one who stays.  Stick to your task till it sticks to you; bend at it, sweat at it, smile at it too; for out of the bend and the sweat and the smile will come life’s victories, after a while”.

  1. I enjoyed your first posting, Dr. Kirk….I mean Captain Kirk! You remind us of a very valuable lesson. I have been guilty of starting a project and not finishing it…especially as it pertains to my home! Accomplishing a goal is one of the greatest feelings…even if it is just a small task such as organizing a closet or the “junk” and catch-all drawer in my kitchen. Perseverance is the key! Thank you for your insightful wisdom and leadership!
